Birthday post once again.

So last year I sat in Theios yapping in the blog of mine about past birthdays of mine.
And now I'm sitting very uncomfortably in a chair that is quite possible the most comfortable chair of all time.
this is awkward.

Anyways,
I wish I could update more with photos, but I am still temporarily without a digital camera. So I have my argus that I have been shooting with a lot, but I haven't quite developed much of the film yet. Any of the film to be exact. I'm poor.

But I love summer. So much, and although I love summer, I can't wait for fall to start. This summer is somewhat good in its own right, but it just isn't THE summer at the house on Gunson. No meals being cooked with friends, no drinking. I still ride my bike, but there isn't any of my friends in Ravenna to ride with me. No darts throwing. No drunken watermelon that leads to sticky floors and sticky records. No jalepeno in the eye. Like where are my dirty sexy messy girls?

For those who don't know (which is everyone),

I can't get a student loan for the life of me.
And for those of you that are close to me,
you know that my entire funding of education depends on student loans.
Now, I don't necessarily blame this on economic times,
because well, other kids are still getting loans.
My parents decided to not cosign a loan for me this year.. Their decision is their own, and I can't do anything about it.
And honestly, I can't get a student loan on my own. I was told that I need a cosigner by all of the banks.
blahhhh.

so in other words,
i can't afford to go to brooks.
i can't move to cali.
i can't afford to go to MSU.
i'm in my third year at school, so i don't know what a community college would do for me.

because of this whole situation occuring last minute,
i passed all of the deadlines for fall internships. <--- sucks terribly.

but there is hope.
i can go to kendall college of art and design.
which is something that I CAN AFFORD because of federal grants and a federal student loan.
and can continue on the plan to live with robot, which makes me smile sooooo big.

so that is where i am at right now.
i'm in this completely odd transitional period and i know that once fall begins i will finally have a little bit more stability.
i've just been so busy trying to everything straightened out with college stuff, financial stuff, and i cannot wait to move out of ravenna again. jesus.

I'm kind of stuck in this tornado of stuff that is completely being whipped around me, and I'm trying to tame it.
And finally I'm starting to have a life again.
So after the first half of summer being completely chaotic and resulting me in becoming quite hermit-like,

its my birthday,
so i'm going to do what i do best.

have fun, obvi.
and wishing that dirty sexy messy could be here to have fun with me too.

It was one of the most beautiful days I have experienced in a long time.

All I can say about this night is that it was beautiful.
I met some of the most amazing people ever, heard some of the most wonderful stories about life and tragedy, and then almost won a plane ticket to wherever I wanted to go.
I love life, and that's all there is to it.

I was walking down Washington Ave in Grand Haven from my friend Molly's birthday party about two weeks ago and I noticed this couple sitting inside a store, just kind of relaxing. AWESOME. Keep in mind, it's like 1 in the morning and the store is clearly closed.
Anyways, here's the story.
A sidewalk sale for all of the stores on Washington Ave, in Grand Haven was taking place Saturday, August 9th. The owner decided that moving all of the items back inside for the night would pointless only to bring them out again in the morning. Instead, Nancy, an employee of Michigan Rag Co, volunteered to camp out inside the store in order to keep an eye on the items left outside. She dragged her husband Dave along for the night, and he looks pretty content doing the crossword in the paper to me.
After talking to them, they seemed so happy and were having such a good time people watching and especially loved laughing at the people leaving the bars late at night.

This second one is actually from my friend Molly's birthday party that I was talking about previously. She asked if she could have a portrait for her birthday present. Of course I LOVED it. The dress that she is wearing was a gift from one of her friends and I think that it's lovely. Of course she is sitting on Ben's lap, and he looks pretty wonderful as well. HA.

This is my brother Kyle, aka Crum. I love him, 'nough said.
This was one morning at one of my other brother's [Wes], Blue and White football scrimmage. It was really fun. Crum and I would put on this football helmet and hit each other as hard as we could.

And finally, Nichole. She was stressing out while trying crank out an audio slideshow on deadline. Man, I'm glad this girl is back at the Snews.

Flea Markets and Cheesy Movies.

Today I got to shoot feature for the paper.
I was so happy.
I don't understand why Angeli doesn't like feature assignments.
I hope one day she loves them as much as I do.

At first I was kind of scrounging for what I wanted to shoot, but then I saw a sign for a flea market not too far from where I was.
So I drove the three miles in the direction of the arrow that the sign pointed me in,
and it led me to the Antique Mega Mall parking lot.
I think it's important to note that I go to that antique shop all the time, in fact I was just there last Friday purchasing an old 8mm film camera. man.
I was quite concerned because it was already 2:30 pm and the market was over at 3, but I got to meet some interesting characters and had some great conversations.

This is Steve Levesque. He lives in Lansing and likes to decorate his house in qhat he calls "shabby chic." We had conversations about hunting at flea markets and he called it an illness. In his words, "you get to the point where you are purchasing just to buy, even if there is no purpose for the item."

He said that he's only been selling stuff for the past month or so because he's just trying to clean out his house. It's time to free yourself a little from items that are weighing you down."
p.s. he sold that radio flyer figurine for 50 cents.

This is Keith Marshall. He's been selling at flea markets since about 1975. He said he got started when him and his wife moved to farm land, where they began planting small crops of corn. Every Saturday he would take 70 ears of corn to the local farmers market and sell it for $1/ear. It continued when his kids needed pairs of blue jeans. He used to go to garage sales and could never find the right sizes of pants for his kids, but he would pick them up anyways and sell them later on. After that, it became a hobby for him and his wife.
He told me all kinds of stories about different items he purchased for dirt cheap thta ended up being worth so much money.
He stumbled across a clay bowl from South Mexico that was made between 800 A.D. and 1200 A.D. He still owns it.
My favorite story he told me today was about a lady in a wheelchair that stole an egg beater from his booth right in front of him. He just watched her because he didn't want to yell at someone in a wheelchair.
That makes me laugh every time I think about it.

Look at how creepy his eyes look in the glasses. It looks as if you can actually see his eyes, but in reality it's the reflection of a white van.
Look closer.

Oh and last night I watched an amazing movie.

Theios and Birthdays.

So it’s 12:16 am and I am sitting in a booth at Theio’s, listening to the awful radio in the diner and drinking coffee that is so hot its bubbles are making me nervous.

There is a couple sitting directly in my view and just watching them interact is better than any television show [I fucking hate tv], they are adorable and make me so happy. They make direct eye contact with each other when they are having conversation, that’s not something I see very often. If I had to guess, I would say they have been dating for about a year and a half. Instead of kissing or sitting on the same side of the booth, their hints of affection are more subtle, like good conversation and an occasional touch of the hand. No fidgeting or nervous laughter, they are completely confident and secure, and I think it’s the best thing in the world. Soon things will probably turn sour, but not yet.

Speaking of love, I have these jackasses in the booth to my left, and I think one of them is intoxicated. There’s three of them, two guys and one girl. The guy sitting across from the couple is the drunk one, and he is going on tangents about love and it’s hilarious listening to his stupidity. One of his more noteworthy quotes: “Dude, man….I love you, you know that bro. And I love that you guys are so in love and I would never try to fuck any of that up. And you know what, no matter how MANY times you guys have broken up and gotten back together, how many times has it been, FOUR times? Well anyways, fuck man, you guys have been through SO much! You guys are going to get married!” At that moment, Lisa, the waitress, sets down the sloppiest burger in the entire world and he procedes to take the largest bite I have ever seen. With burger still lingering in his fucking loud-ass mouth, “DAWWWG…who’s going to be yo best man? You know I’m going to be your best man, come on dawwg.
”

I don’t know when breaking up and getting back together four times constituted going through so many trials and tribulations that you DESERVE to get married. Congratulations, you guys suck so much as a couple that you’ve broken up four times, man you guys are ready to head down the aisle! Piss on them.

So, it’s my birthday now. I’m twenty. Man, it snuck up on me. I was thinking about past birthdays earlier, and it’s so funny the ones that stick.

I was twelve, I believe. My parents had finally let me have a birthday party with friends, I got a beanie baby from Sam Way and my mom and my aunt planned a treasure hunt for me and my friends, I got way too into it, so did my dad.

I was thirteen, and I had a birthday party at the park, that was the last birthday with Papa [ my grandpa], and I just remember getting scratch-off lottery tickets winning 60 dollars and thinking it was the coolest thing in the world. I also remember how fat I was, how I was wearing a pink tank top and a yellow old navy visor, with my hair in French braids, I was quite the sight. I think I got a boombox that year. I still have it, I think it’s the one my dad threw at my door.

Skip ahead.

16: I had my first serious boyfriend, but we were still in the early stages. Oh James, I had the biggest crush on you. I woke up early that morning, went on livejournal and read a letter that James had wrote to his ex-girlfriend talking about how he wondered what she was up to now, and describing funny memorable experiences they had in the past, and with some fucking Brian McKnight lyrics dedicating them to her.
Hahaha
He got me a gold necklace that had been hidden in my basement. I still have it somewhere.

17: No more boyfriend. My parents got me my first camera, I went NUTS.

18: Dustin and I went to Logan’s Roadhouse for dinner. I had some sort of shishkabob, made inappropriate jokes about it, and threw a peanut that landed in some stranger’s water glass. We were immature and I liked it.

19: Dustin and I were on the outs, and he really wanted to go to a Tiger’s game on my birthday. At first, he was just going to go without me, that ass. He finally put two and two together, “oh she loves baseball, AND it’s her birthday…maybe I should take her.” Well fuck! Really I didn’t care about him buying my ticket, I just wanted to be invited, I mean, he was going with our friends anyways…dumbass. It was funny and I was pissed.

So now I’m twenty and probably more responsible and immature than ever and I miss my mom’s funfetti birthday cake. Damn.
I'll give you an update on the funness my friends and I will have tomorrow. I'm sure there will be documentation.

I walked a good 3.5 miles back to my apartment after work at 11 pm.
Don't quote me on the distance.
anyways,

this is a tree that was illuminated by a streetlight. i thought the colors were nice for really late at night.
but obviously i should have exposed for the street lamp and then flashed the rest of it without losing the integrity of the tree colors from the light,
or else just not shot with the light in it.
which is very apparent throught the blown out lamp and the sunspot or whatever you want to call it.
but i really don't care.
it was a long walk and i had to find some way to amuse myself.
plus i was too lazy to bust out my flash.
enough complaining.

i think the shutter speed on this was like 150 with an aperture of 3.2 and an iso of 1600.

During a day off of school, 5th grader Aaron Stewart, 11, leans over the railing as he casts his line into Grand River Ave. at Brenke Fish Ladder Park in Old Town Lansing, MI. "We caught a pretty big fish earlier today," says Stewart, "but we had to let it go 'cuz my mom said no more fish. Not until we eat the last one we caught."

Stewart grabs a worm from the tackle box before hooking it. Stewart and Snyder collect the worms themselves before fishing instead of buying them at the local bait shop.

I've been thinking about picking up and leaving a lot lately.

And the thing is that I really would, I've done it too much already.

I spend/have spent my entire life basing what I believe life is as the human connection. But in the end, you are the root of your life, the source, the basis. It is only you and your surroundings-- whatever you choose them to be.

If one cannot make themselves completely happy by themselves, how pathetic is that?

The foundation of life is yourself and you alone, and its when life really flourishes when you have a connection. I used to say HUMAN connection, but I am learning more and more that it doesn't have to be with another human being. It just have to be that CONNECTION.

Sometimes, life has to be experienced in the most minimalist way. Everything else just taints it.

Expand your horizons.

I can't afford to get sick.
But I do.
The other day while I was laying on Yael and Sarah's futon sick to my stomach,
I came to ask myself...
could this all have been prevented if I would have just taken my Flintstone vitamins?

And then the question turned to, how many would I have to take for it to have an affect on me? I mean, technically, I am smaller than I was when I still took the vitamins when I was a kid. But the inside of my body is older. hmmm....

After scouring the internet to find a much needed answer to this question, I decided to settle on reading the discussions and forums for helpful advice. This 19 year-old guy wrote on a yahoo forum asking if it was okay that he was taking 3 Flintstone vitamins a day, I found the responses quite humorous.

My two favorite were:

Response #1: None (as in don't take any), ur too old for that and u should start taking protein.
I personally like his use of the word you, or should I say, "u". This guy might be on a protein overdose.

Response #2: Why don't you just buy some adult vitamins that you take once a day. And if you just like the children's gummy vitamins for the taste then go get some gummie bears and call it a day.
THIS IS COMPLETELY UNACCEPTABLE.
Flintstone vitamins are NOT gummie, nor should they ever be gummie. They are a chalky solid goodness. I am severely offended.

Three...Two...One

Three Things I accomplished over spring break (needless to say, they are all high priorities in life):

1. Spent a whopping $6 on dishware for my apartment this summer at Goodwill. I like to stay classy, obviously.
2. Did all of my laundry that had accumulated from January to March only to find out that my family's dryer is broken. Being the resourceful person that I am, I found every location in my house where there was a vent for heat and placed all of my clothes over each vent and cranked up the heat. It only took my clothes two and a half days to dry, and let's just say, I'm glad I'm not going to be around when my parents get the heating bill this month.
3. Found out that my town was so bored they decided to burn down the old flower shop instead of just tearing it down. I think the firefighters really just wanted a reason to get dressed up, and by all means, I am TOTALLY okay with burning down a building for the heck of it.

Two revelations I had last night:

1. After much discussion with my friend Alexa, we have decided to ride these around campus.

2. I think I am going to strictly shoot with this camera my brother bought for me from Goodwill.

One Question I had after yesterday:
How do ladies that collect dolls get husbands?
Creeeeeeeeeepy.

Is it just me, or does this doll look like me?
